The Hollow Men - Chapbook

THE HOLLOW MEN - CHAPBOOK
by Melissa Haavisto | Spring 2014

For my Publication Design II final project, I chose to create a chapbook for T.S. Eliot's classic poem The Hollow Men. Utterly haunting and full of despair (and really one of the only things I vividly remembered from taking English Literature once upon a time), I set out to create rough, scratchy and slightly spooky illustrations to mirror the text.
The final copy was transfer printed onto a handbound linen cover, with the text and illustrations printed on a cream 100lb stock.

Note: The full text was printed and illustrated. The following is simply an excerpt.
The colour palette was an important element. I kept it stark, and played with dry textures such as linen and a black scaly spine cover (see below).
Cover
Inner title spread
Mistah Kurtz- he dead
A penny for the Old Guy
Back Cover
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Thank you for viewing!
